The National Police Support Fund attended the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) Legislative and Technology Conference at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC.
Our team attended breakout sessions relating to border security, volunteer policing, mental health, jail administration, and identity documents fraud. The nation’s top experts in law enforcement presented the latest information relating to the policy challenges affecting law enforcement.
The NSA provided a legislative briefing relating to their 2019 legislative agenda. Border security and immigration are their top priorities. Other issues that the NSA will tackle in 2019 are marijuana, opioids, telecommunications privacy, domestic abuse, and drug control. The NPSF will monitor legislative developments year-round relating to the NSA’s agenda and other law enforcement topics of interest.
The highlight of the conference was over fifty sheriffs descended on Capitol Hill to deliver a letter to Congressman Mark Walker (R-North Carolina). The NSA Board of Directors asked Congress to stop a budget proposal from the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives that would inhibit the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from doing its job. The proposed budget would limit ICE to having 13,500 detention beds and it would make it difficult for sheriffs to use their jails as overflow facilities.
The legislative conference wrapped up with a plenary sessions featuring acting United States Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and NFL Vice President of Operations Troy Vincent.
We look forward to next year’s NSA Winter Technology and Legislative Conference in Washington, DC.
