By Election Day on November 2nd, the residents of New York City were living in a place which was far more dangerous than it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.
US News & World Report noted that by Election Day, “murders are up more than 40% and shooting incidents have doubled since the same point in 2019 […]”
But despite the attempts by the Left over the last 18 months to attribute every negative consequence of their policies on Covid-19, we know government policy is responsible for the degradation of Law & Order in America.
While New York City was not the first city in America to target the police in its radical policy making post-George Floyd, few places have felt the brunt of these failures more than the Big Apple. So, it is no coincidence that two candidates up for election in the city’s mayoral race have deep connections to law enforcement in the city.
The winner of that race was Democratic candidate, and former NYPD Captain, Eric Adams. Adams, who will be sworn in as New York City’s 110th mayor, beat his challenger Republican Curtis Sliwa, with 73% of the vote.
Adams, who has also been a New York State lawmaker and is currently Borough President of Brooklyn, spent 22 years on the force in New York City, and was able to run on a winning platform which thus far has successfully threaded the needle on Law & Order and responsible police conduct.
Adams’ position on crime and vision of resecuring New York’s streets as mayor are both captured succinctly in a recent interview given to NPR following his victory:
“I’m conservative on public safety, you know? And I’m clear that when you see 13-year-old children in our schools stabbed in libraries; a woman was shot while walking down the block with her baby in the carriage – when I use the term conservative, it means I have zero tolerance for abusive and criminal and violent behavior. So I don’t believe people who discharge guns on Monday should be out of jail on Tuesday, the next day. That’s not acceptable. But you can do that without being abusive.”
For many living in the city, the failed leadership of incumbent mayor, Bill De Blasio, has been a betrayal. Adams says he will turn it around:
“My fellow New Yorkers, that betrayal stops on January 1.”
Adams has vowed to reform the city’s plainclothes gun-unit, eliminated by De Blasio’s City Hall, as one of his first orders of business.
It is noteworthy that Adams’ opponent was also an iconic figure in New York City. Curtis Sliwa, currently a conservative radio personality, founded The Guardian Angels.
Since 1979, the non-profit, New York City based group, has been responsible for creating hundreds of safety patrols chapters throughout the United States and worldwide, according to the non-profit organization’s website.
These two figures going head-to-head for the mayorship of New York City highlighted the urgency with which De Blasio and City Hall’s failed leadership endangered the lives of New Yorkers.
The victory of Adams is a rebuttal of radical Defund policies and the “all or nothing” recklessness of Leftist politicians who have hijacked law enforcement in major cities across the country.
